Cooking for Mozart
Molly Yeh grew up surrounded by music… she went to the Juilliard School to pursue a musical career in percussion, but then found her calling as a food writer and cookbook author. Performance Today host Fred Child drove up to Grand Forks, Minnesota to meet Yeh at her farm on the high prairie… hear their conversation as well as what she’d make if Mozart came over for dinner…

The Movies and the Music: A celebration of Oscar-winning film scores
With this year’s Academy Awards coming up on Sunday, we’re looking back at the history of Oscar-winning film scores with a three-hour special hosted by Lynne Warfel. Meanwhile, Jay Gabler has been taking deeper dives into Oscar-winning film scores by decade: the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s,

’60s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

This year, La La Land tied a record

for most nominations ever — including in the categories of Best Original Score and Best Original Song. Read Jay’s review of La La Land;

and read more about the film’s director, composer, and sound editing. Another big nominee, Manchester by the Sea, features a lot of classical music

— which, ironically, helped doom its chances for an Oscar nomination.

Exploring the gentle power of guided relaxation
When Joanne D’Amico is hard at work, she’s making sure you’re not. “Stress can really take a toll on our health and well-being, especially when experienced for long periods of time,” she says. “It is extremely important to interrupt those long periods of stress with some deep relaxation.”

For 13 years, D’Amico worked as a registered nurse, primarily as a general surgical nurse. “Having a medical background has helped me understand the impact that long-term stress can have on our health and well-being, especially in terms of the physiological reactions that occur with both stress and relaxation,” D’Amico explains.

Happy 80th birthday to Philip Glass

Musical genius is about more than what music you write: it’s about when you write it, and where you put it. Philip Glass has been in a lot of the right places, at a lot of the right times, for 80 years and counting.

Happy 80th birthday to Philip Glass
This week, living legend Philip Glass celebrated his 80th birthday. He’s been called the world’s most famous living composer, an icon who’s bridged eras and continents with his accessible, immediately recognizable style. He’s also, however, been one of the most controversial composers of his generation.

On our website, Jay Gabler writes a vigorous defense of a musical genius who “has been in a lot of the right places, at a lot of the right times, for 80 years and counting.” Also, Garrett Tiedemann pays tribute to Glass’s film scores, and the composer’s colleague Laurie Anderson talks about Glass’s Piano Etude No. 10.
